Classroom Management

This step is a succession of practicalities for the language classroom, It is to grapple with what we call classroom management, which encompasses an abundance of factors ranging from how you physically arrange the classroom. By understanding what some of the variables are in classroom management, you can take some important steps to sharpening your skills as a language teaching.

Chalkboard use:
The chalkboard is one of your greatest allies. For this reason you can take advantage of this instant visual aid by profusely using the chalkboard. At the same time, try to be neat and orderly in your chalkboard.

Your voice:
One of the first requirements of good teaching is good voice projections. When you talk, project your voice so that the person sitting farthest away from you can hear you clearly.

Giving instructions:
When the teachers give instructions, it is important for them to check that the students have understood what they are being asked to do. This can be achieved either by asking a student to explain the activity after the teacher has given the instruction or by getting someone to show the other people in the class how the exercise works.

Seating arrangement

You may have had the experience of walking into a classroom and finding the movable desk all lined up in columns that are perpendicular to the front wall of the room.

If your classroom has movables desk-chairs, consider patterns of semi-circle, U shapes, concentric circle, or – if your class size is small enough –one circle so that students aren’t all squarely facing the teacher. If the room has tables with two to four students at each, try to come up with configurations that make interaction among students most feasible. Give some thought to how students will do small-group and pair work as little chaos as possible.

How to motivate your students?

Tips:
♥Show students your expectation on them
♥Make students understand the aim & nature of the course
♥Use different teaching methods
♥Be learning-oriented rather than goal/mark-oriented
♥Give constructive comments rather than demeaning ones
♥Give feedback to students’ performance as soon as possible
Provide one-to-one assistance

There are many ways to motivate students to learn and participate in the classroom leading to increased student success. these ways are:
Be Excited:
The more excited you are about something, the more excited your students will be. If you find the topic you are teaching boring, so will your students, so find creative ways to teach the most boring lessons.

♦Teach Teamwork
Have activities that your students can work on together. Group your students for simple projects such as finding a current event to share every week.

♥Teach Problem Solving Skills
Teaching your students to solve problems will allow them to be naturally interested in what they are learning. Providing opportunities for students to make mistakes and figure out how to accomplish a goal will make school more interesting, and thus motivate them to try.

How to teach to beginners

Success is easy to see at this level, and easy for the teacher to arrange. But then so is failure! Some beginners find that the language learning is more stressful than expected and reluctantly give up. However, if things are going well, teaching beginners can be incredible stimulating. The pleasure of being able to see our part in our students’ success is invigorating.

The first thing to remember is that absolute beginners have had no contact with English, for that reason you need to use different methodologies such as: Audio-lingual method, Total physical response.

Audio-ligualism Method: *this method emphasis on grammatical patterns with behaviorist theories of learning. This method affirms that the knowledge is the result of habits-formation (it response to a stimulus).

Total Physical Response: This method is essential in beginner’s students; because the teachers need to such and to use different gestures for teach vocabulary, questions, etc. Try to develop specific gestures as codes for certain linguistic operations.

tips to teach grammar ☺

I recommend the following class structure when teaching grammar skills:

•Begin with an exercise, game, listening, etc. that introduces the grammar concept.
•Ask students questions that will help them identify the grammar concept to be discussed.
•Follow with another exercise that more specifically focuses on the grammar concept, but takes an inductive approach. This could be a reading exercise with questions and responses in the structure that is being taught.
•Check responses, ask students to explain the grammar concept that has been introduced.
•At this point introduce teaching explanations as a way of clearing up misunderstandings.
•Provide an exercise which focuses on the correct construction of the grammar point. This could be an exercise such as a fill the gap, cloze or tense conjugation activity.
•Ask students to once again explain the concept.
As you can see, the teacher is facilitating students to do their own learning rather than using the 'top down' approach of dictating rules to the class.

How to teach grammar?

grammar should be taught in an interesting, interactive way
Consider the following as you integrate grammar into your lessons.

•Find good lesson plans.
It's difficult to make a good grammar lesson from scratch, so any searching you do for appropriate grammar lessons in textbooks or on the Internet will be time well spent. See the Lesson Materials section of this guide for possible resources.
•Use meaningful texts.
The sentences you use to teach and practice grammar shouldn't be random. Choose material that is relevant. For example, if your learners are preparing for citizenship or need workplace English, use these contexts to create appropriate examples. If possible, bring in real-life, authentic texts to illustrate your points.
•Teach basic grammar words.
Although you need not be fluent in grammar jargon, it's a good idea to teach at least some vocabulary (noun, verb, past tense, etc.) to assist you in your explanations. Intermediate and advanced students may be familiar with many such words already.

another things to know, it is that the grammar could be teaching by Inductive and Deductive way for example:

☺ Inductive is known as a 'bottom up' approach. In other words, students discovering grammar rules while working through exercises. reading comprehension which includes a number of sentences describing what a person has done up to that period in time.

After doing the reading comprehension, the teacher could begin to ask questions such as: How long has he done this or that? Has he ever been to Paris? etc. and then follow with When did he go to Paris?

☺Deductive is known as a 'top down' approach. This is the standard teaching approach that has a teacher explaining rules to the students.

For example:

The present perfect is made up of the auxiliary verb 'have' plus the past participle. It is used to express an action which has begun in the past and continues into the present moment... etc.

How to teach speaking?

Speaking is a skill which deserve attention, it is a skill that needs to be practised and developed as much as we can, if we have the opportunity in our classroom, practice and practice we should do that, to speak give us the opportunity of pronouns better, to practice the grammar, the vocabulary that we have learned.
the teacher has to do a communicative class where the student speaks too, increase speaking opportunities for our students, During a grammar, vocabulary, reading, or listening lesson, we can always provide opportunities for meaningful speaking practice.
we can use different techniques to achieve that our students speak in class, for example:
♣Collaboration: When students are given a written exercise to complete, we can ask them to complete it in pairs, they have to discuss and agree on what the correct answers are.
♣Brainstorming : Students can be asked to work in pairs or groups to brainstorm ideas, that is, to come up with as many ideas as they can think of.
♣Personalization : Throughout our lessons, we can give students opportunities to talk about themselves, their families, their interests, and their experiences.
♣Using Why questions :Using frequent Why questions gets students to think about their responses and gives them more opportunities to express themselves.
